Summary of Duties:

Reporting to the Senior Trade Commissioner, the Trade Program Coordinator is a member of the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service, (a worldwide network of professionals in international business development) at the Embassy of Canada to Portugal, based in Lisbon. S/he works closely with one or more Trade Commissioners (TCs), on sector initiatives undertaken by the Trade Commissioner Service (TCS) in Portugal.  

This includes: 

  • Managing the trade general inbox, as contact point for all non-sector specific queries;
  • Providing direct support to Canadian companies in specific reactive sectors, with support from TCs and Senior Trade Commissioner (STC);
  • Conducting sector/client research and drafting communication materials (emails, reports, market profiles) in support to priority sectors;
  • Providing logistical and administrative support to enable TCs to deliver on their annual business plan, including trade missions and shows (e.g., coordinating travel, managing visits, drafting correspondence, B2B meetings, registrations, client calls);
  • Managing the team’s budget spreadsheet, processing financial transactions and delivering regular budget updates to the STC;
  • Maintaining contact databases, tracking tools and Excel spreadsheets to support operations;
  • Developing and drafting engaging and strategic social media content, with focus on LinkedIn.
 

 

Area of Selection:

This position is open to: 

•Local staff (indeterminate, term, temporary/emergency employees) and contractors of the Embassy of Canada in Lisbon who meet all the essential requirements. 
•General public meeting all essential requirements and are currently authorized to work in Lisbon, including non-nationals.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience.

Candidates must clearly demonstrate when applying to the position how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

Education:

Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education.

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university. 

Language:

  • Advanced level of Portuguese (oral, comprehension, written)  
  • Advanced level of English (oral, comprehension, written)  

Experience:

A minimum of two (2) years of professional experience, within the last seven (7) years, in at least three (3) of the areas mentioned below: 

  • Experience supporting general trade promotion 
  • Experience serving clients and dealing with external stakeholders in a professional environment
  • Experience planning and managing events, conferences or trade shows
  • Experience conducting research, analysis and presenting/synthesizing information effectively

 

RATED REQUIREMENTS

The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview (online pre-recorded/live or in-person), role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of international trade and the mandate and role of the Canadian Trade Commissioner Service
  • Knowledge of general office procedures and practices and information management techniques
  • Knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite of software applications (Word, Excel, Outlook Mail) and collaborative tools (e.g., MS Teams)

Asset Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.

  • Intermediate level of French (oral, written) 
  • Experience facilitating high-level visits and/or delegations
  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university, specializing in commerce or economics
  • Knowledge of local business environment, and trade and investment opportunities for international companies in Portugal
  • Experience in directly advising clients in international business development setting
  • Experience working in a diplomatic office or international organization
  • Proficiency in working with graphic applications (e.g., Canva, Photoshop)
  • Working knowledge of budgets and the principles of financial management
  • Experience managing and creating content for social media platforms, particularly LinkedIn
 

 

Operational Requirements:

  • Hours of work will be 37.5 hours/week.
  • Ability to work overtime, sometimes with little to no advance notice (including, potentially, extended hours, late evening, weekends.)
  • The default location of work for staff is within the office of the Embassy of Canada in Portugal.
  • Ability to travel when required

 

Conditions of Employment:

Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position, and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position.

- Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.

- Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.
