Summary of Duties:

Under the direct supervision of the Embassy Property Team Manager, the Senior Technician will play a central role by assuming the following responsibilities:

  1. Conduct maintenance and repairs on mission property and equipment while leveraging expertise in either refrigeration/air conditioning OR electricity (building or industrial), as well as knowledge in other fields such as plumbing, ventilation and heating.
  2. Collaborate closely with the Property Manager to plan and allocate tasks among the team's generalist technicians.
  3. Provide advice to the Administrative Assistant in charge of purchasing materials needed for technical work.
  4. Design and implement preventive maintenance programs.
  5. Oversee and support the generalist technicians in the execution of various projects.
  6. Supervise and ensure the quality of work carried out by external suppliers. 

 

Area of Selection:

This position is open to candidates who have the right to reside and work in Algeria as an employee on a permanent basis, as well as to all employees of the mission occupying an indeterminate or determined position and to employees hired in a temporary contract, who have all the essential qualifications and whose applications are received before the closing date.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience.

Candidates must clearly demonstrate when applying to the position how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

*Language will be assessed further during the process. 

Education:

Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education.

Applicants must meet at least one of the following conditions and provide proof of completion of their studies.   

      • A Senior Technician diploma in refrigeration/air conditioning, or an equivalent qualification that is clearly demonstrated by a combination of technical training and experience.

OR 

      • A Senior Technician diploma in electricity (building or industrial), or an equivalent qualification that is clearly demonstrated by a combination of technical training and experience.

Language:

      • Intermediate proficiency in French (reading, writing, comprehension and speaking).
      • Intermediate proficiency in Arabic (reading, writing, comprehension and speaking).

Experience:

      • Minimum of two (2) years' recent professional experience* in performing maintenance services (including preventive maintenance) for property and equipment in at least one of the following fields: refrigeration/air conditioning, electricity (building or industrial).
      • Minimum of two (2) years' recent* professional experience in providing repair services for property and equipment in one of the following fields: refrigeration/air conditioning, electricity (building or industrial).
      • Experience in maintenance and/or repair work in at least two of the following fields: plumbing, ventilation, heating.
      • Experience in construction project management.
      • Experience in team management.

*Recent experience means experience acquired within the last four (4) years.

 

RATED REQUIREMENTS

The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview (online pre-recorded/live or in-person), role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

Knowledge:

      • Proficiency in repair and maintenance techniques in at least one of the following functional areas: refrigeration/air conditioning, electricity (building or industrial).
      • Familiarity with repair and maintenance techniques in at least two of the following functional areas: plumbing, ventilation, heating.
      • Proficiency in reading technical drawings (blueprints).
      • Thorough understanding of occupational health and safety regulations.

Competencies:

      • Organizational skills, including prioritization, planning, time management and attention to detail.
      • Autonomy and initiative.
      • Ability to provide excellent customer service.
      • Ability to work under pressure.
      • Effective communication.
      • Informed judgment.

Asset Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.

      • Work experience in a diplomatic mission, an international organization or a body with a similar profile.
      • A basic level of proficiency (reading, writing, comprehension and speaking) in English.

Operational Requirements:

      • Willingness and ability to work occasionally outside normal working hours and/or on weekends.
      • Working hours: 37.5 hours per week.

Conditions of Employment:

Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position, and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position.

      • Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.
      • Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.
      • Other conditions of employment:

- Possession and maintenance of a valid driver's license (required for trips to pick up materials, etc.).

- High level of physical fitness (required to perform tasks such as lifting heavy objects, handling tools, moving furniture, etc., in compliance with safety techniques and ergonomic standards).

- Ability to work in hazardous conditions (with provision of appropriate personal protective equipment and in compliance with occupational health and safety regulations).
