Context
Working in the international business development team of the Embassy of Canada in Lima, under the general direction of the Trade Program Manager, the incumbent will help Canadian firms export to Peru by providing expert guidance and in-market support. Responsibilities of the position include identifying and qualifying business leads for Canadian companies and guiding them in the local market; developing and maintaining a solid network of contacts in the territory; preparing and disseminating market information to Canadian clients to facilitate their entry; initiating, organizing and managing trade and investment promotional activities, advocating for Canadian commercial interests, as well as other priority trade development activities.
Success in this role requires strong relationship-building skills, a wide network and understanding of market dynamics in the mining sector, and the ability to deliver high-quality services that enable Canadian companies to sell and succeed in Peru.
Summary of duties
Under the general direction of the Trade Program Manager, the Senior Trade Officer contributes to the delivery of the Trade Program at the Embassy, with specific responsibility for mining and oil & gas, as well as activities related to responsible business conduct (RBC).
The Senior Trade Officer will be responsible for supporting Canada’s participation/interests in commercial opportunities (export, investment in Canada, trade alliances). With respect to RBC, he/she will play an active role promoting best practices, applicable international guidelines and resources, and will proactively engage with industry, stakeholders and experts, to help identify challenges and opportunities faced by Canadian companies in Peru. Responsibilities of the successful candidate will include developing and maintaining strong networks of contacts in both public and private sectors, identifying business leads, acquiring market intelligence, and providing strategic advice to Canadian clients on the local business environment and trade opportunities. He/She will prepare and implement strategic plans (including social media), reports, briefs, speeches and presentations. He/She will maintain an internal database of customer relationship management. He/She will plan and execute events and high-level visits from Canada (including managing budgets, contracts, and staff). He/She will collaborate closely with other Canadian missions, partner bureaus in Headquarters, other government departments, provinces/territories and other Canadian stakeholders. Additional duties include conducting research, preparing communication products including speeches, providing troubleshooting support to Canadian companies, and developing market knowledge in their sector.
Also, part of the job description, are all other duties that may arise as required by the Trade Program Manager or Head of Mission.

Essential Qualifications
All essential qualifications will be assessed. Education
This position requires:
- Bachelor’s degree from a legally registered institution.

Language
The Following languages and proficiency levels are required for this job. Candidates will be formally assessed or requested to provide proof of certification on these levels.
- Advanced (similar to C1 in the Common European Framework of Reference - CEFR) or higher written and spoken proficiency in English and Spanish.
Experience
- Recent* and significant** experience in business development either in the private or public sector, in one of the following sectors in Peru:
- Mining
- Oil and gas
- Experience in providing strategic advice, briefings, and written reports to management and/or clients on international business issues.
- Significant** experience in organizing and delivering trade promotion events or missions.
- Significant** experience in developing and maintaining networks of business contacts in Peru.
- Significant** experience in gathering market intelligence and using it to assess risk and opportunities.
*Recent experience is defined as experience obtained within the last 10 years.
**Significant experience is defined as the depth and breadth of experience normally obtained during at least five years of work in a similar role.

Asset Qualifications
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.
- Intermediate (similar to B2 in the CEFR), or higher, written and spoken proficiency in French.
- Experience working for a diplomatic mission (e.g., Embassy) or an international organization (e.g., UN, World Bank, UNESCO, and similar).
- Master’s degree (or higher) in business, politics, international studies, or subject related to the duties of the position.
- Experience in facilitating high-level government visits, business delegations and event coordination.
Operational requirements
- Hours of Work: Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with Locally-Engaged Staff regulations of 37.5 hours per week.
- Availability of working overtime, often on short notice, which may include evenings and weekend.
- Travel: this position may require limited occasional travel domestically and/or internationally.
- Willingness and ability to work in a combination of Peruvian and Canadian statutory holidays, which means you will be required to work on certain Peruvian holidays

- Valid work authorization: Hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period
- Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period (will be started once the staffing process is completed and may take ~4 weeks)
