Position no.1: Agriculture and Agri-food, Fish and Seafood 

Position no.2: Ocean Technologies; and Maritime Defense and Security

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

 

The Embassy of Canada to Indonesia is seeking dedicated and dynamic individuals to work as a Senior Trade Officer, primarily with Canadian and Indonesian companies to support Canadian exports to Indonesia.

Working under the direct supervision of the Senior Trade Commissioner or other Trade Commissioner at the Embassy of Canada to Indonesia, the Senior Trade Officer’s main responsibilities include:

 

  • Engaging in activities to advance market access and export development for the relevant Canadian sector(s), including understanding, analyzing and reporting on trade policy issues, developing potential advocacy strategies, and facilitating regulatory collaboration, in the context of the implementation of the Canada-Indonesia Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) signed in September 2025. 
  • Conducting research and analysis of trends, local developments, and emergent opportunities to promote and advance Canada’s export interests in goods and services in Indonesia.
  • Providing advice, expertise and recommendations to the Senior Trade Commissioner and/or Head of Mission (i.e. Ambassador) as the focal point of contact on trade opportunities, program implementation, policies, market intelligence and official visits and events in sectors of responsibility. 
  • Fostering strategic alliances, including developing and maintaining a network of local and international business contacts, like-minded partners, and identifying key business leads to introduce Canadian businesses to potential opportunities in Indonesia.
  • Providing strategic advice and services to support Canadian companies (i.e. “clients”) pursuing business development activities in Indonesia, including but not limited to, advocacy and troubleshooting.
  • Planning and implementing strategic annual business plans and activities that are aligned with key Government of Canada goals, objectives, and policies.  
  • Performing other related duties that support the overall work of the Trade Program, such as planning high-level visits, business missions, writing strategic briefing notes, reporting, presentations and administrative functions.

 

AREA OF SELECTION

This selection process is open to internal and external applicants legally residing in Indonesia at the time of interview and appointment and to mission (“Embassy of Canada”) employees occupying an indeterminate position. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Indonesia.

Education

These positions require:

  • Degree from an accredited college, polytechnic or university in Commerce, Business Administration, International Relations, Economics, Political Science, Public Administration, Political Economy, or a related degree that meets the requirements of this position.

Language

The Following languages and proficiency levels are required for this job. Candidates will be formally assessed or requested to provide proof of certification on these levels. 

  • An advanced proficiency level (writing and speaking) in English.
  • An advanced proficiency level (writing and speaking) in Bahasa Indonesia.

 

Experience

In order to perform the duties relevant to this job, the following experience is required.

A minimum of four (4) years’ recent experience (i.e., within the last six years) in the following:

  • Experience in providing strategic advice, oral briefings, and written reports to management or foreign companies on international business and trade issues in Indonesia.
  • Experience in developing and managing relationships with foreign companies and stakeholders, including preparing for and conducting meetings with key contacts in Indonesia.
  • Experience in international business development, including developing, planning, and coordinating international trade events (e.g., trade shows, roundtable or networking events) and business missions (e.g., trade delegation) with minimal supervision.

 

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of the Indonesian business environment, as well as international trade and investment opportunities for foreign businesses in Indonesia.
  • Knowledge of international business development practices, including excellence in client service delivery, market research and competitive intelligence gathering.

 

Abilities: 

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to analyze business information to identify export opportunities and provide strategic and expert advice to clients, in writing or orally, including on the regulatory environment in Indonesia.
  • Ability to advance foreign commercial interests through negotiating market access or market development efforts.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

The role supports key priority sectors, including Position no.1: Agriculture and Agri-food, Fish and Seafood, and Position no.2: Ocean Technologies, and Maritime Defense and Security. Preference may be given to the candidates with the following asset qualifications:

  • Experience within a diplomatic mission, international organization or foreign company operating in Indonesia.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally in French, at the beginner level.

For position 1: 

  • Experience in project management related to Agriculture and Agri-food, or to Fish and Seafood, involving managing multiple priorities with tight deadlines. 
  • Experience in international business development related to the Agriculture and Agri-food sector, or to the Fish and Seafood sector.
  • Knowledge of Canada’s Agriculture and Agri-food or Fish and Seafood sectors, businesses, geographic regions, economic strengths, and export interests.
  • Ability to advise on Indonesian regulations and import requirements for Agriculture and Agri-food, or Fish and Seafood products.

For position 2:

  • Experience in international business development related to ocean technologies; or to defense and security (any sub-sector of defence and security; does not have to be related to maritime-specific defence and security); or to aerospace; or to life sciences; or to medical technologies.

 

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Operational requirements will be assessed on a "meet/does not meet" basis and can be used to determine right fit of a candidate for the position.

  • Working hours are 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday. Work hours from Monday to Thursday are 7:30 am – 4:15 pm and on Friday from 7:30 am – 1:00 pm, with the option to work remotely one day per week.
  • Must be willing to travel within Indonesia and internationally; and 
  • Must be available for occasional duties outside normal working hours (i.e. evenings and weekends).

  • Valid work authorization:Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.

  • Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada.
