The Senior Political and Economic Officer will support the Political and Economic Section’s work to advocate for Canadian priorities and deepen the strong and rapidly growing Canada-Norway relationship. Under the general direction of the Political and Economic Counsellor, the Officer monitors and prepares analyses and reports on various political and economic developments on a range of topics related to the promotion of Canadian interests that could touch on foreign policy and economic files and domestic dynamics in Norway. The position requires undertaking research, liaising with relevant partners, preparing reports and analyses, and supporting briefings for the Embassy of Canada to Norway and clients in Ottawa. As part of the Political and Economic team, the Officer will participate in the planning and execution of high-level visits, engagement with Canadian experts, and others.

The Officer will require expert knowledge of Norwegian politics, domestic and economic affairs, understanding of Canada’s policy priorities and foreign policy objectives, and appreciation of the current global geopolitical context. The Officer will also be responsible to monitor the Norwegian language media (press, social media, television as needed) and summarize and share relevant information to feed into analyses and reports. Through strategic advice, analytical contributions and program execution, the Officer will contribute to advance Canada’s political and economic interests in Norway and recommend opportunities to deepen collaboration in emerging and existing cooperation areas of the bilateral relationship (e.g., as varied as defence, energy, AI, etc.).

The position requires establishing working relationships with a variety of stakeholders including Norwegian government officials, think tanks and institutes, academia, civil society, diplomatic missions, etc. The Officer could be called upon to represent the Embassy of Canada at events and conferences. Under the supervision of the Political and Economic Counsellor, the position would require holding bilateral discussions with Norwegian interlocutors and undertaking coordination with other diplomatic missions.

Additionally, the Officer will support the Embassy on policy, analysis, programmes, communications (e.g., support to develop social media content to promote Canadian initiatives and interests in Norway), and support for visits by Canadian officials to Norway.
