Summary of Duties:
Under the supervision of the Common Services Officer, the Technicians provide repairs and technical services to properties owned by the High Commission. This includes planning and preparing preventive technical maintenance programs and providing guidance and training to occupants and colleagues.
Related activities include:
- Plans and oversees specialized and general repairs, and maintenance projects;
- Plans the work, reviews technical assessments and reports from Specialized Technicians and contractors, and provides advice and recommendations to management on prioritization and costing of the work;
- Revises and prepares project plans and progress reports, and recommends maintenance and repair work, purchases of equipment, tools and material;
- Assists the Property Services Assistant with basic general repairs, and the general preparation of owned residential properties pre-occupancy.
- Conducting inspections pre- and post-occupancy, including any outfitting that may be required;
- Supervision of a Maintenance technician, supervising and inspecting the work performed by contractors;
- Completing related administrative tasks, such as writing technical assessments, providing cost estimates for projects or specialized work, and writing inspection reports; and
- maintaining a network of contacts with local service providers, suppliers and contractors.
Area of Selection:
This position is open to external applicants eligible to work in Australia and individuals currently occupying an indeterminate, term or emergency position in the High Commission of Canada to Australia, as well as dependents of Canadian diplomats. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience.
Candidates must clearly demonstrate when applying to the position how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

Education:
Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education.
- Graduation from a building/construction trade school; OR an equivalent combination of high school education and experience.
Language:
- Fluency in English (writing, speaking, reading)
Experience:
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in maintaining buildings, assets and equipment, including tending to long-term maintenance projects;
- A minimum of 2 years of experience of general administration related to maintenance (e.g. scope of work, coordination, cost estimate, stock management etc.);
- Experience in performing maintenance and technical projects in at least 2 of the following functional areas: masonry, plumbing, painting, electrical or HVAC.
RATED REQUIREMENTS
The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview (online pre-recorded/live or in-person), role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of electricity / heating and ventilation system (HVAC) and of general maintenance (plumbing, carpentry and masonry);
- Knowledge of general asset/building life-cycles and routine maintenance schedules required to extend the life of assets;
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements and procedures; and
- Knowledge of MS Office tools (Word, Excel, Outlook).

Abilities:

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.
- Specialized training in plumbing and / or carpentry and / or HVAC system;
- Experience with security installations such as gates, motors, keypads and/or CCTV.
- Trade designation in one of the following fields: carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, auto/vehicle mechanic;
- Basic French (writing, speaking, reading).
Operational Requirements:
- Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week, 5 days a week.
- Must be available for occasional duties outside normal working hours (i.e., evenings and weekends), sometimes on short notice
- As a member of the Canadian diplomatic presence abroad, there is a requirement to adhere to Canada’s Code on Values and Ethics.
Conditions of Employment:
Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position, and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position.
- Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.
- Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.
- Other conditions of employment:
- Able to obtain and retain a Government of Canada Reliability Status which includes a criminal background check. This clearance is a requirement prior to appointment from the Government of Canada. This involves, among other things, Australian Federal Police checks, credit checks, and validation of qualifications. The required level of security clearance must be maintained throughout the employment period.
