Summary of Duties:

 

Under the direct supervision of the Common Services Assistant, the responsibilities of the position holder are as follows:

  • Provide safe driving services to senior officials, including the Head of Mission, program managers, mission staff, as well as visitors or dignitaries, using regular or armored diplomatic vehicles, in accordance with health and safety policies and procedures;
  • Offer security recommendations to passengers regarding their travel in the vehicle;
  • Use navigation applications to determine the optimal route and maintain an efficient and safe travel schedule;
  • Perform regular maintenance checks and cleaning of both regular and armored vehicles. Arrange for necessary repairs and ensure vehicles are fueled and always ready for use;
  • Carry out various logistical tasks, including payment of fees (tolls, monthly parking), updating daily logs, and preparing allowance forms, inspection reports, and incident reports;
  • Deliver packages and official correspondence, and liaise with local authorities (airport, protocol, post office, customs, licensing), shipping companies, and other service providers to facilitate customs clearance of shipments, high-level visits, and management of diplomatic mail;
  • Perform other related duties, such as protocol support, escort services, or any other activities in support of the Common Services section or other mission programs.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience.

Candidates must clearly demonstrate when applying to the position how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

*Language will be assessed further during the process. 

 

Education:

Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education.

  • Algerian secondary school baccalaureate or a Canadian high school diploma.

 

Language:

  • An intermediate level of proficiency (reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking) in French.
  • An intermediate level of proficiency (reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking) in Arabic.

 

 

Experience:

  • Recent professional experience of at least two (2) years in a similar position within a diplomatic mission, an international organization, a private company, a public authority, or as a passenger driver.*
  • Experience driving vehicles with both manual and automatic transmission.
“Recent” is defined as within the past five (5) years.

 

 

RATED REQUIREMENTS

The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview (online pre-recorded/live or in-person), role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

 

Knowledge:

  • Good knowledge of the Wilaya of Algiers, including its train stations, airports, embassies, business centers, and highway network;
  • Knowledge of local regulations related to driving, road traffic, vehicles, and road safety;
  • Knowledge of vehicle maintenance;
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Outlook.

 

 

Competencies:

  • Autonomy and initiative;
  • Adaptability and flexibility;
  • Judgment, discretion, and professional integrity;
  • Effective interpersonal skills and respect for others.

 

 

Abilities: 

  • Read maps, judge distances, use GPS, estimate travel time, and plan routes in advance;
  • Remain calm and perform well in stressful situations.

 

 

Asset Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.

 

  • Hold a valid Government of Canada reliability clearance;
  • Professional experience as a VIP driver;
  • Knowledge of automotive mechanics and/or first aid;
  • Basic spoken English skills.

 

 

Operational Requirements:

  • Willingness to occasionally work paid overtime outside of regular hours, with or without prior notice, according to operational needs (including very early mornings from 3 a.m., late evenings up to midnight, weekends, and public holidays);
  • Availability required on public holidays when the embassy is open;
  • Occasional travel expected for assignments within Algeria;
  • The position requires driving vehicles, sitting for extended periods, and lifting packages, boxes, luggage, goods, and/or equipment weighing up to 20 to 23 kg;
  • The incumbent must complete and pass specialized training to operate an armored vehicle and ensure the security of authorized mission personnel in high-risk areas.

 

 

Conditions of Employment:

Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position, and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position.

- Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.

- Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.

- Other conditions of employment:

Medical requirements: Meet the requirements of a mandatory medical examination, including vision and hearing tests.
Driver’s license: Hold and maintain a valid driver’s license for the entire duration of employment.
