Term Details: This position is a Locally Engaged Staff position, subject to the Terms and Conditions of Employment for LES in New Zealand. This process will be used to create a list of eligible candidates for similar positions either indeterminate, term or temporary types of employment.

Summary of Duties:
 
  • Oversees and provides housekeeping and hospitality services at the Head of Mission Residence and sometimes at the High Commission by:
    • cleaning and ensuring that all areas and equipment are kept in a clean and orderly condition;
    • setting up the premises according to diplomatic standards;
    • welcoming guests;
    • serving food and beverages during official events;
    • offering assistance to the chef (prep work).
  • Liaises with High Commission staff to order supplies and conducts errands for the residence
  • Supervises work done by contractors (such as but not limited to plumbers, wait staff, etc.)
  • Suggest ways to improve the tools and procedures used to provide efficient and high-quality cleaning services 
  • Assists with the management of Crown-owned assets, including proper storage, inventories, and care
  • Occasionally prepares simple meals
 
Physical Effort
 
The work assigned requires bending, lifting heavy objects, standing on step ladders, performing repetitive movements, and being physically active for prolonged periods. 
 
 
Psychological Effort
 
The Head of Mission Residence (Housekeeping) Attendant role requires great attention to details to ensure that all areas of the Head of Mission residence are kept in good order. There can be exposure to psychological stress while performing duties especially in anticipation of scheduled diplomatic events taking place at Head of Mission residence or the High Commission.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
 
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to language and experience.
Candidates must clearly demonstrate when applying to the position how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

Language: 
  • Basic oral communication and written skills in English.
 
Experience:
  • A minimum of two (2) years' experience in housekeeping 
 
 
RATED REQUIREMENTS
 
The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities, and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to an oral interview (online pre-recorded/live or in-person), role-play and/or practical tests.

Asset Qualifications:
 
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.
 
Education
 
  • National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) or equivalent if studies achieved abroad.
 
 
Language:
 
  • Knowledge of French
 
Experience:
 
  • Experience working as a housekeeper in diplomatic or international organization
  • Experience of managing formal hospitality
  • Light cooking
 
Operational Requirements:
 
  • Hours of work: 22.5 hours per week, 3 days per week
  • Ability to work overtime and occasionally during the weekends and holidays
  • Annual leave may be affected due to operational needs
  • As a member of the Canadian diplomatic presence abroad, requirement to adhere to Canada's Code on Values & Ethics
  • Willingness to undergo training
 
 
Conditions of Employment:
 
Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position.
  • Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.
  • Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.
 
Other conditions of employment:
 
  • Only New Zealand citizens, permanent residents or those holding a valid visa permitting them to work for a determinate period of at least 20 months at the time of application in New Zealand will be eligible to apply. In the latter case, a term base contract will be offered. The High Commission of Canada is unable to provide employment sponsorship.
  • Able to obtain and retain a Government of Canada Reliability Status, which includes New Zealand police check, credit check, and validation of qualifications. The Reliability Status must be maintained throughout the employment period.
