Summary of Duties:

Under the supervision of the Common Services Officer, the Technician provide repairs and technical services in properties owned by the High Commission.  This includes planning and preparing preventive technical maintenance programs and providing guidance and training to occupants and colleagues.  
Related activities include:
•    providing technical advice and recommendations to management on work to be done;
•    ordering and recommending the purchase of specialized equipment and tools;
•    conducting inspections pre- and post-occupancy, including any outfitting that may be required;
•    overseeing and inspecting the work of contractors;
•    completing related administrative tasks; and
•    assisting the Property Services Assistant with basic general repairs, and the general preparation of owned residential properties pre-occupancy.
In addition, the Technician may be asked to provide driver services to senior officials (including the Head of Mission) in the absence of the mission's senior driver.


Area of Selection:

This position is open to external applicants eligible to work in Australia and individuals currently occupying an indeterminate, term or emergency position in the High Commission of Canada to Australia, as well as dependents of Canadian diplomats. ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience.

Candidates must clearly demonstrate when applying to the position how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

*Language will be assessed further during the process. 

 

Education:

Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education.

•    Graduation from a building/construction trade school; OR an equivalent combination of high school education and experience.

 

Language:

•    Fluency in English (speaking, reading)

 

Experience:

•    A minimum of 1 year of experience in maintaining buildings, assets and equipment, including attending to long-term maintenance projects and resolving urgent issues;
•    Experience in performing maintenance and technical projects in at least 1 of the following functional areas: masonry, plumbing, painting, electrical and/or HVAC.


 

RATED REQUIREMENTS

The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview (online pre-recorded/live or in-person), role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

 

Knowledge:

•    Knowledge of electrical and heating and ventilation system (HVAC) and general maintenance (plumbing, carpentry and masonry).

 

Competencies:

•    Adaptability / Flexibility;
•    Client service orientation;
•    Teamwork and cooperation;
•    Awareness of values and ethics in the workplace.

 

Abilities: 

•    Effective interactive communication in English - oral;
•    Ability to work independently with initiative and good judgment.

 


Asset Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.

•    Specialized training in plumbing and / or carpentry and / or HVAC system;
•    Experience with security installations such as gates, motors, keypads and/or CCTV.
•    Trade designation in one of the following fields: carpentry, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, auto/vehicle mechanic;
•    Experience supervising contractors
•    Basic French (speaking, reading).


 

Operational Requirements:

•    Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week, 5 days a week.
•    Full Australian driver’s license
•    Must be available for occasional duties outside normal working hours (i.e., evenings and weekends), sometimes on short notice
•    As a member of the Canadian diplomatic presence abroad, there is a requirement to adhere to Canada’s Code on Values and Ethics.


 

Conditions of Employment:

Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position, and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position.

- Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.

- Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.
