SUMMARY OF DUTIES

The mission is seeking to fill a 186 - Maintenance Technician / 186 - Technicien(ne) à l'entretien position for the common services program as well as various general services positions that may arise following this selection process. The Maintenance Technician provides general maintenance services and assists with/performs repairs on crown-owned or leased assets and equipment in areas such as carpentry, masonry, painting, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, and mechanical systems and other duties as required.

AREA OF SELECTION

This selection process is open to all applicants, who are residing and legally authorized to work in Sri Lanka, including High Commission employees, Canada-based staff spouses and their dependent children of at least 18 years of age, who meet all the essential qualifications and whose applications are received by the closing date.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education

This position requires:

Minimum Secondary School education Advanced Level from a legally recognized Secondary/High School  

 OR   
NVQ level 05 equivalent vocational training in a recognized institute in HVAC/Electrical/ mechanical

Note: Candidates will be required to provide proof of their education

Language

The Following languages and proficiency levels are required for this job. Candidates will be formally assessed or requested to provide proof of certification on these levels. 

  • An intermediate proficiency level (reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking) in English
  • An intermediate proficiency level (reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking) in Sinhala

Experience

In order to perform the duties relevant to this job, the following experience is required.

  • Minimum three (03) years (within the past five (05) years) of experience in general maintenance and repair work in a commercial, institutional, or residential setting
  • Experience in troubleshooting and repairing systems such as electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and carpentry
  • Experience supervising contractors and managing small projects

Competencies

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.

  • Experience as a technician in a Diplomatic Mission or an International Organization
  • More than three (03) years of recent professional experience* as a maintenance technician or in a similar position with responsibility for repair/maintenance in either plumbing, HVAC, carpentry or electrical. (*) denote within the past 5 years
  • Knowledge of audio-visual equipment setup and troubleshooting
  • Knowledge of Tamil (spoken, and basic reading and writing skills)
  • In possession of a heavy-duty driver’s licence

ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS

the High Commission of Canada to Sri Lanka and Maldives has established that the following will be considered to meet specific organizational needs:

  • Ability to lift /move objects up to weight of 25 kgs
  • Ability to climb a ladder

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Operational requirements will be assessed on a “meet/does not meet” basis and can be used to determine right fit of a candidate for the position.

  • Hours of Work: Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with Locally-Engaged Staff regulations of 40 hours per week.
  • Overtime: Willingness to work overtime on short notice.

Travel: This position may require limited domestic or international travel.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.
  • Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status security level which includes a criminal and credit background check by the Government of Canada.
