SUMMARY OF DUTIES

The mission is seeking to fill a Janitor position as part of the Common Services team of the Embassy of Canada to Ethiopia. Under the supervision of the Property and Material Assistant, the incumbent will be providing cleaning, maintenance and general facility support services to ensure a safe, clean and well-functioning environment for staff and visitors. Core responsibilities include but are not limited to: 

  • Performing daily cleaning and sanitation of offices, common areas, kitchens, hallways, and shared spaces
  • Cleaning and restocking all washrooms, ensuring hygiene supplies are adequately maintained
  • Emptying garbage and recycling bins and ensuring proper waste disposal
  • Cleaning interior and exterior glass surfaces and windows
  • Maintaining cleanliness of outdoor areas, including entrances, terraces, walkways and parking areas
  • Stetting up meeting rooms and providing support for official or hospitality events
  • Performing scheduled tasks such as vacuuming, refrigerator cleaning, and quarterly deep-cleaning
  • Monitoring and restocking cleaning supplies and notifying the supervisor when replenishment is required
  • Supporting large cleaning projects and supervising contractors when assigned 
  • Following mission safety and security procedures, including handling cleaning chemicals and access restrictions 
  • Other duties as required. 

 

AREA OF SELECTION

Education

This position requires:

  • A Secondary/High School Diploma (or equivalent) from a legally recognized institution

OR 

  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience

Note: Candidates will be required to provide proof of their education

 

Language

The following languages and proficiency levels are required for this job. Candidates will be formally assessed or requested to provide proof of certification on these levels. 

  • An intermediate proficiency level (reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking) in English.
  • An advanced proficiency level (reading, writing, comprehension, and speaking) in Amharic.

 

Experience

In order to perform the duties relevant to this job, the following experience is required.

  • A minimum of 2 years of recent* experience in a Janitor role.

*Recent is defined as within the last 4 years.

ASSET QUALIFICATIONS

Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.

  • Recent* experience working in an Embassy / International Organization / NGO /hotel / hospital / school / airport or other commercial buildings in a role as a janitor
  • Cleaning training with a recognized cleaning company
  • Recognized technical and professional certification in a related field
  • Valid Government of Canada Security Clearance

*Recent is defined as within the last 4 years.

 

OPERATIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Operational requirements will be assessed on a ``meet/does not meet`` basis and can be used to determine right fit of a candidate for the position.

  • Hours of Work: Normal hours of work for this position are in accordance with Locally-Engaged Staff regulations of 37.5 hours per week.
  • Overtime: Willingness and ability to work overtime on short notice.
  • Uniform: The employee will be required to wear a uniform during working hours. 

 

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position. They are to be maintained throughout the employment period.

  • Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.
  • Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada.
