On behalf of the Government of Canada, the Embassy of Canada to Portugal invites interested parties to apply for the position of Honorary Consul in Ponta Delgada, Azores. 

 

Summary of Position 

In accordance with direction from the Embassy of Canada in Portugal, under the coordination of the Counsellor (Administration) & Consul, these functions may include: 

  • Providing consular assistance and advocacy to Canadians 
  • Preparation for and assistance during emergency situations
  • Issuance of Emergency Travel Documents 
  • Supporting the Embassy in developing commercial and economic relations 
  • Representing Canada at diplomatic, ceremonial, and public affairs events 
  • Serving as a local point of contact for the Embassy 
  • Providing administrative and logistical support for official Canadian visits to the Azores 
  • Participating in training provided by the Embassy  

 

Essential Requirements 

To be considered for this process, please provide examples that clearly and specifically demonstrate how you meet the following requirements in your application: 

  • Reside in Ponta Delgada for most of the year 
  • Hold the required authorization to reside and work in Portugal 
  • Be a person of independent means; 
  • Comprehensive understanding of regional governance intricacies and government; 
  • Demonstrate a tangible connection to Canada (citizenship, education, employment, family ties, business ties, etc.). 

 

Education and Experience 

  • A degree from a recognized university, or an acceptable combination of equivalent education, job related training and/or experience; 
  • Experience in decision-making with respect to sensitive and complex issues; and 
  • Experience dealing with different levels of local authorities. 

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities  

  • Ability to maintain good relations with local authorities; 
  • Understanding of political, economic and social dynamics in the Azores and Portugal; 
  • Client Service Orientation  
  • Effective communication skills in English or French 
  • Effective communication skills in Portuguese  

 

Personal Suitability 

  • Integrity and respect of values and ethics; 
  • Sound judgment; and 
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills 

 

Asset Qualifications 

  • Proficiency in both Canadian official languages (English and French); and 
  • Office availability for client services 

 

Eligibility factors and conditions of employment 

  • Eligibility for a Government of Canada Reliability Status which includes a criminal and credit background check.

  • could have a real, apparent or potential conflict of interest. 

 

Selection procedure 

The selection process will consist of a review of all applications to ensure that applicants meet the Essential Requirements, and Asset Qualifications (if applicable). Only those applicants who demonstrate they meet these requirements will be contacted by the selection committee for an interview or further assessment. 

The assessment may include an interview, reference checks, and other tests that will consist of a series of questions designed to evaluate each applicant's knowledge, abilities, and personal suitability for the position.
