Summary of Duties:
This Locally Engaged Officer Position works as part of the Foreign Policy and Diplomatic Service Team:
- managing High Commission relations with Australian national and local media;
- managing and preparing content for the High Commission’s social media channels and website;
- planning and executing public campaigns and events to promote Canadian foreign policy priorities;
- participating in the planning and execution of high-level visits;
- leading, planning and executing public diplomacy initiatives and activities;
- conduct research to support the drafting of analyses and reports.
Area of Selection:
This position is open to external applicants eligible to work in Australia and individuals currently occupying an indeterminate, term or emergency position in the High Commission of Canada to Australia, as well as dependents of Canadian diplomats. Candidates must meet all of the essential qualifications stated below and applications must be received by the closing date.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS
Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience.
Candidates must clearly demonstrate when applying to the position how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

Education:
Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education.
- Graduation from a college or university with a specialization in communications, political studies, journalism, humanities, social sciences, or related discipline. Alternatively, an equivalent combination of Education and experience can meet this criteria.
Language:
- Advanced ability in English, both written and oral
Experience:
- Minimum two years professional experience in an internationally focused organization, whether private or public sector;
- Minimum three years recent (within 7 years) professional experience in journalism, media and/or public relations with duties that include writing, media relations, event planning or social media marketing.
RATED REQUIREMENTS
The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview (online pre-recorded/live or in-person), role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.
Knowledge:
- General knowledge of Canada and Canadian government foreign policy interests in Australia
- Knowledge of Australian politics, culture, media and civil society
- Knowledge of the Australian print and broadcasting news ecosystem
- Managing social media and use of social media tools
- Project management including budgets

Asset Qualifications:
Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.
- Ability in French, both written and oral.
Operational Requirements:
- Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday
- The position is based in Canberra and in-person presence at the High Commission is required during regular working hours
- Must be available for occasional duties outside normal working hours (i.e., evenings and weekends), sometimes on short notice
- As a member of the Canadian diplomatic presence abroad, there is a requirement to adhere to Canada’s Code on Values and Ethics
Conditions of Employment:
Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position, and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position.
- Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.
- Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.
- Other conditions of employment:
- Able to obtain and retain a Government of Canada Reliability Status which includes a criminal background check. This clearance is a requirement prior to appointment from the Government of Canada. This involves, among other things, Australian Federal Police checks, credit checks, and validation of qualifications. The required level of security clearance must be maintained throughout the employment period.
- Only Australian citizens, permanent residents or those holding a valid visa permitting them to work unrestricted in Australia will be eligible to apply. The High Commission of Canada in Australia is unable to provide employment sponsorship.
