Summary of Duties:

Under the direct supervision of the Driver Dispatcher and general supervision of the Deputy Management Consular Officer (DMCO), the driver/messenger provides transportation for the Canadian Embassy authorized passengers, performs delivery and collection of materials, provides messenger services, ensures the proper maintenance of assigned vehicle, and provides support services to the mission following established mission and departmental policies. The majority of the driving will take place in and around Addis Ababa, but occasional multi-day trips will also take place to other regions in Ethiopia. Note that willingness and ability to work frequent overtime and to work late at night is necessary for this position

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience.

Candidates must clearly demonstrate when applying to the position how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

*Language will be assessed further during the process. 

 

Education:

Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education.

  • Ethiopian General Secondary Education Certificate 

 

Certification requirement 

  • Minimum valid 3rd grade driving license or equivalent

 

Language:

  • Fluency in oral English  
  • Fluency in Amharic (written and oral) 

 

Experience:

  • Minimum of 2 years of recent (in the last 5 years) experience working as a driver for diplomatic staff OR in a diplomatic mission OR in an international organization/NGO (references will be undertaken)
  • Experience in minor vehicle maintenance (for example oil and air filter change, tire change, headlight repair, transmission and break inspection) in a professional or personal capacity (testing will be undertaken)

 

RATED REQUIREMENTS

The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview (online pre-recorded/live or in-person), role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

  • Ability to complete and maintain detailed driver logs

 

Asset Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.

  • Knowledge in Canada’s other official language (French)
  • Experience in convoy driving
  • Experience in defensive driving (such as armoured vehicles)
  • Holds a current and valid security clearance for the Government of Canada

 

Operational Requirements:

  • Required to be in good health with vision appropriate for main duty of driving (e.g. visual aids, glasses acceptable). A medical evaluation may be required
  • Working hours: 45 hours per week 
  • Ability and willingness to work frequent overtime outside normal office hours (early morning / late at night and during weekends)
  • May be required to travel away from home for overnight trips 

 

Conditions of Employment:

Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position, and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position.

- Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.

- Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.

- Other conditions of employment:

  • Ability to meet the medical requirements as defined by the employer. Successful candidate(s) may be required to undergo a medical evaluation
  • Must have at minimum a valid 3rd grade driving license or equivalent
