Summary of Duties:

Under the general supervision of the Head of Mission (HOM) and the Major Domo, the incumbent is responsible for preparing all culinary aspects of Canada’s representation abroad including assisting with identifying appropriate Canadian and local cuisine, maintaining a hygienic kitchen environment, and assembling such cuisine for official and unofficial hospitality events (including but not limited to formal and informal luncheons, dinners, cocktails and receptions). The incumbent is also responsible for inventory, budgeting, and procurement of food for official and unofficial hospitality events. 

 

Area of Selection:

This vacancy is open to candidates who have the right to reside and work in Cameroon as well as to all employees of the High Commission of Canada in Cameroon occupying an indeterminate or term position, including emergency employees, who meet all of the essential requirements stated below, and whose applications are received by the closing date.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates will initially be screened against the Essential Qualifications relating to education, language* and experience.

Candidates must clearly demonstrate when applying to the position how they meet each of these essential qualifications.

*Language will be assessed further during the process. 

 

Education:

Candidates will be required to provide proof of the completion of their education.

  • Diploma in Culinary Arts, Catering or Food and Beverage from a government recognized institute/college/university or an acceptable* combination of education, training, and relevant experience.

    *Acceptable combination of education and relevant experience is considered as a total of three (3) years or more

Language:

  • Fluency in English or French (reading, writing, and speaking) 

 

Experience:

  • At least two (2) years of recent experience (in the past five (5) years) working as a Sous-Chef or Chef in a restaurant, hotel, diplomatic mission / official residence, or similar service environment in the Food & Beverage industry;
  • Experience with the meal preparation for events (25 guests or more), including meal planning, procurement of produce, and contracting of additional kitchen / wait staff;
  • Experience in cooking a vast array of types of meals for example appetizers, cocktail foods, main courses, baked goods and desserts;
  • Experience in cooking international food (such as Canadian or Central African or European or Asian) and Cameroonian cuisine.
  • Experience in kitchen management – effective hygiene, budgeting, staff supervision. 

 

RATED REQUIREMENTS

The Rated Requirements are part of the essential qualifications and are relating to knowledge, abilities and competencies. Methods of assessment for rated requirements may include, but are not limited to, a written examination, an oral interview (online pre-recorded/live or in-person), role-play, practical tests, presentations and/or psychometric assessment.

 

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of general culinary procedures and practices;
  • Knowledge of hygienic procedures and cleanliness, food quality and safety;
  • Knowledge of the reliable local service providers in the food industry.

 

Competencies:

  • Effective interactive communication in French or English – oral and writing);
  • Professional integrity;
  • Attention to details;
  • Initiative;
  • Flexibility and adaptability.

 

Abilities: 

  • Ability to co-ordinate conflicting priorities within short time frames, organize his/her time and work efficiently;
  • Ability to prepare menus for various type of events as well as cost estimates and procure produce from quality sources;
  • Ability to work in a team environment.

 

Asset Qualifications:

Preference may be given to candidates who meet the Asset Qualifications. Where applicable, candidates must clearly demonstrate how they meet any asset qualifications.

  • Experience in meal preparations for large events of 45 guests or more, including meal planning, procurement of produce, and contracting of additional kitchen / wait staff;
  • Understanding and / or ability to communicate in the second official language; 
  • Working experience in an Embassy / Official Residence; 
  • Experience leading a culinary team. 

 

Operational Requirements:

    Availability and willingness to work overtime, periodic evenings or weekends as required. Overtime is only paid after completing the required 45 hours of work per week;
•    Ability to lift boxes up to 20 kg.

 

Conditions of Employment:

Conditions of employment must be met or complied with before being appointed to a particular position, and are to be maintained throughout the employment while being the incumbent of this position.

- Valid work authorization: Ability to obtain and hold a valid work authorization covering the entire employment period.

- Security screening: Obtain and maintain a Reliability Status (security level) which includes a criminal and credit background check from the Government of Canada covering the entire employment period.
